Year 1 & 2 - Bay, Myrtle and Willow classes
Dear Parents & Carers
Welcome to Terms 1 and 2 at Borough Green Primary School. We are very excited to meet our new classes!
Learning Curriculum
Children in year 1 will see a reduction in child led learning as they get used to greater structure in preparation for Year 2.
Maths:
In Year 1 and 2, we will begin the term learning about place value. This will involve working with numbers within 10 for Year 1 and numbers up to 100 for Year 2. We will then build on this number knowledge by moving on to working with addition and subtraction. Towards the end of the term, we will move on to geometry.
Things you can do at home: It would be amazing if you could support children if you see them reversing numbers when writing them at home.
Literacy:
In term 1 we will be focusing on narrative texts in writing lessons. To kick start the term we will be using different fairy tales to inspire our writing and will start with ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ (Year 1) and an alternative version, ‘Little Red Reading Hood’ (Year 2). Year 1 will continue with the Little Wandle phonics programme to reinforce and extend their phonetic knowledge from Reception. Year 2 will be reading a wide range of texts this year and focusing on the year 2 spelling requirements of the National Curriculum. Both year groups will have 3 focused reading aloud sessions each week.
History:
The theme for history is ‘Childhood’. As well as learning the language needed to describe the passing of time we will be looking at what it was like to be a child in the past, (particularly the 1950s) and comparing it with nowadays. We will be thinking about areas such as games and toys, family life, clothes, school and food. We have also been lucky enough to borrow some artefacts from the Maidstone Museum to support us with our learning this term that we are excited to share with the children!
Science:
Our work this term is all about everyday materials. We will show the children that objects are made from materials. They will identify a range of everyday materials and their sources. Children will also investigate the properties of materials and begin to recognise that a material's properties define its use. They will achieve this by testing what might be the best material to use to create bunting for outside.
RE:
We will be learning about what is meant by the term “Christian” and what Christians generally believe. We will be acknowledging and celebrating differences.
Art:
The theme for Art is ‘Funny Faces and Fabulous features.’ Children will learn about the concept of a portrait, how portraits can be made in different ways and look as collage as a focus.
Computing:
We will be learning about our online safety and the different uses of the internet.
DT:
The theme is ‘Shade and Shelter’ where the children will learn about the purpose of shelters and their materials. They will design and build shelters and evaluate their completed products.
Geography:
Our work in geography teaches children about physical and human features, maps, cardinal compass points, and positional and directional language. They learn about the equator, hemispheres and continents and are introduced to the countries, capital cities and settlements of the United Kingdom. The children carry out simple fieldwork to find out about local physical and human features.
Homework
Your child will visit the school library each week where they will be given a free choice and bring home one library book each. It would be wonderful if you could spend time reading these books together; it may be the adult reading to the child.
Year 1 will also receive a book to read that is linked to their phonics. We would encourage you to read this book daily with your child to support them to read it fluently. The children will have already read these books the previous week in class so they may be confident but please continue to encourage them to read them daily to fully embed learning.
In Year 2, we continue to send books home linked to children’s learning. This may be through our little Wandle scheme or using our accelerated reader books.
All children will have a Reading Record book that we ask you to comment in each time you read. House points will be awarded to children who return their reading record book each day with a comment inside.
Children in Year 1 and 2 will receive a short activity/task to complete each Friday. Please return work to be shared by the following Friday. For Year 1, this can be shared in the form of a hard copy or via Tapestry.
Wellies
Please can you ensure your child has a named pair of wellies in school as we will be venturing outside when weather watching. We have racks in school for their safe storage.
