BGPS Book Week
What a week it is has been! There was a real buzz around the school on Monday as the children arrived to see all of the staff had become characters from Roald Dahl books over the weekend! Mrs Jackson as the infamous Miss Trunchbull was a firm favourite… for some! The children joined in with lots of activities including making Fantastic Mr Fox masks, composing musical motifs for the insects in James and the Giant Peach, drama and role play activities using the Revolting Rhymes and creating their own Willy Wonka sweets… just to name a few!
On Tuesday and Wednesday the children enjoyed stories told by different adults as the teachers swapped around the school and the 10p book sale was a roaring success! A special assembly saw Mrs Jackson sharing a book about Mae Jemison and her resilience when making her dreams come true, and our Reading Ambassadors shared their favourite books as well. Watch this space for a lot more coming from these reading role models!
Thursday saw World Book Day 2026 in full action, with everyone joining in dressing up as their favourite book characters. The creativity and enthusiasm was a sight to behold and we had a range of characters including The White Rabbit, Cruella de Vil, and a good amount of Princesses! As well as showing off their amazing costumes, children enjoyed class swaps across the school, buddying up with children from different year groups and making new friends to share books with. After school, the children ‘spent’ their book tokens on the World Book Day books, the queue went all around the library and it was wonderful to see so many children taking their time to choose a book they think they’ll enjoy.
This afternoon, we have welcomed parents in for the first of several planning community reading events. It was wonderful to see children engaging with their adults, sharing pleasure in reading a book.
Thank you for your support this week, everyone has worked incredibly hard both in school and out of school to make it a memorable experience for the children, and to highlight the importance of reading at any age.
I just wanted to end with a quote I read by Kerri Cunningham aka Murphy’s Sketches ‘Books ignite little imaginations, show them new places, and create wonderful childhood memories’.
