Sustainability

At Borough Green Primary School, we want our children to grow up to understand their place in an ever-changing world and be able to take steps to protect and nurture that world.  We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills to make positive changes and support a sustainable future, both at Borough Green Primary School and beyond.  Sustainability links to our school values of responsibility, kindness and respect.  Our sustainability team of governors, staff and pupils lead and monitor our work in this area.

Through our Cornerstones curriculum and other subject areas, we allow children to consider the impact of human actions on the planet and identify sustainable solutions.

We are fortunate to have extensive outdoor spaces for learning and play, including a wonderful Forest School space, an outdoor classroom area, a nature area and eco garden.   Children and the wider school community are involved in caring for and renewing these spaces.

Our Climate Action Plan lays out our sustainability priorities and actions.

Eco council and eco warriors

Our eco council is a group of Year 6 children with a special interest in the environment.  Their role includes working towards our Eco Schools accreditation.  The eco council holds regular meetings, generates ideas to support sustainability in the school and helps out with sustainability activities.

This year, the eco council has undertaken a review to inform the creation of our Eco Schools action plan.   They have supported the action plan areas for development of waste, litter and school grounds by ensuring all classes know how to separate recyclable and non-recyclable waste.  They also run a weekly litter picking club to encourage all children to participate in keeping our school tidy.  In the autumn term, they helped run an assembly to promote Cut Your Carbon November.

Each class also has an eco warrior who is responsible for checking recycling in their classroom and supports the eco council’s activities.
