Year 1 & 2 - Bay, Myrtle and Willow classes

Dear Parents and Children,

Welcome to Terms 3 and 4 at Borough Green Primary School.

Learning Curriculum

Maths: Our topics will be Number and Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Measures (including money and time) and Data Handling, Fractions and Shape.

Literacy: This term we are exploring texts that relate to our new Learning Experiences and will include ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’ for Year 1 and ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs’ for Year 2 as part of our We Are TV Chefs experience. We will then be looking at the story ‘On the Way Home’ as part of the Town Planners Experience. After February half term we will write blurbs and book reviews as part of Book Week.  We will also be completing an historical recount of the Easter Story.

Geography and History: We will be thinking about our local community in Borough Green and looking at both human and physical geographical features of the locality including a traffic survey.

Science: Our work this term is based on a healthy and balanced diet. Next term we will be investigating materials and their properties and we will be designing a raincoat for a bear.

RE: This term we will continue to look at Judaism including the Jewish festivals. Alongside this we will continue to learn more about Christianity including the Easter Story and a visit to the Church of the Good Shepherd with a focus on baptism.

DT and Art: In Design and Technology we will be designing and making a raincoat and designing and creating a 3D box for Easter cakes. In Art we will be completing observational drawings of fruit and then we will be printing using inspiration from repeating patterns in the local environment. We will also be weaving a large scale whole class project to celebrate the arrival of Spring.

In Computing we will create and film ourselves as TV Chefs including using an editing tool.

Please refer to the school website for additional information regarding the curriculum for Years 1 and 2.

Homework

We will continue to send homework each week. This will consist of a My Maths activity to be completed online and later in the term a worksheet based activity.  In addition, a spelling list will be sent home each week. The children will complete their spelling test on a Monday and sent home for you to see. Please return the spelling book each Monday in readiness for the next set of spellings to be sent on the Wednesday. We would be very grateful if you could ensure you child learns their spellings as these are extremely important as the statutory tests are now heavily weighted towards spelling, punctuation and grammar.

We will be sending a home reader each Monday, this will be an Accelerated Reader if your child reaches the assessment threshold. Your child will also bring home a library book. Home readers/accelerated readers and library books need to be returned each week in order that your child can choose a new book.

PE

All Bay and Myrtle classes will have indoor PE on a Monday, Willow will have their indoor PE on a Friday and all classes will have outdoor PE on a Wednesday. Please make sure that your child has a named PE kit in school at all times. Hair must be tied back and earrings removed. I would just remind parents/carers that staff are not able to remove and replace earrings.  Please be aware that your child needs a pair of either plimsolls or trainers in school at all times and that as the weather is now much colder a pair of Borough Green joggers would be very useful for outdoor PE.

In Term 4, Year 1 and 2 will have their swimming sessions. Swimming will take place on either a Wednesday or a Thursday depending on your child’s class. Further information will follow about the swimming closer to the time.

Book Bags, Pencil Cases and Water Bottles

Just a reminder that children must use a school book bag as we do not have the space to accommodate rucksacks etc. Please do not send a pencil case into school as items get easily lost. We would prefer children to use a named school water bottle.

Inclement Weather

Please make sure you send an appropriate coat, hat, gloves depending on the weather.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Kind regards,

Mrs Brown, Mrs Wibroe and Mrs Austen
