Year 1 & 2 - Bay, Myrtle and Willow classes

Dear Parents and Children, 

Welcome to Terms 3 and 4 at Borough Green Primary School. 

Learning Curriculum 

Maths: We will be following the strands contained within the National Curriculum for Maths for years 1 and 2. Our topics will be Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Measures (money and time) and Data and Shape. Please click on the link below to see our Calculations Policy.

Literacy: This term we will be starting off by looking at different instructions, including recipes, as part of our ‘Masterchef’ experience. We will also be reading and writing about how to make bird feeders. Our second experience is called ‘Town Planners’ and we will be reading ‘On the Way Home’ by Jill Murphy. It’s a wonderfully entertaining story about Claire, who has a very vivid imagination when explaining her cut knee to her mum. Apart from using our own imaginations we will be learning more about using dialogue in reading and story writing. 

Geography: Later in Term 3 and as part of our experience, ‘Town Planners, we will be learning about Borough Green’s place within the United Kingdom, Europe and the world. The children will learn how to use an atlas. We will be investigating the human and physical geography around Borough Green and this will involve some field work. We will be out and about around the village investigating how the land is used. This will lead us to making our own maps of the area, an activity we always really enjoy. We will be looking closely at aerial photographs and identifying features and places we know. 

SCIENCE: In ‘Singing in the Rain’ we will be exploring the properties of different materials in preparation for making waterproof coats. 

ART: We will be exploring printing townscapes and will be using a variety of hard and soft, smooth and textured objects to form our pictures. 

DT: In Design and Technology, we will be making bird feeders. This is something new for us and links to our instructional writing in Literacy. We will also be having great fun making ‘Owls on Toast’ and writing up our recipes (after we have eaten the owls of course)! In ‘Singing in the Rain’ we will be designing and making a waterproof coat for a teddy. 

Forest School: We will be making bird feeders and thinking about where to position them around the school grounds. 

In Computing, we will be following a unit called ‘TV Chefs’ where we will be using the ipads to channel our inner Jamie Olivers to make our own cookery programmes.

Homework 

In terms of reading, your child will visit the school library each week where they will be given a free choice and bring home one library book each. They will continue to have a book linked to their phonics. As part of our new Phonics scheme, Little Wandle, we will very soon be switching to the Black Cat books which will be available to you as E-Books. Keep your ears and eyes open for further information regarding updates on phonics. You can also visit our website where you will find some useful materials on how to support your child with their phonics at home. Many Year 2 children, are now taking Accelerated Readers home and are really enjoying taking the quizzes and watching their own progress. All children, whichever scheme they are on, should read daily and should bring their reading book and Reading Record into school every day so that we can monitor their progress. 

PE 

All Year 1 and 2 classes will continue to have indoor PE on a Tuesday and outdoor PE on a Friday. Please make sure that your child has a named PE kit in school at all times. As a rule Year 1 and 2 bring their kits in at the beginning of a new term and take them home at the end of the same term. Unlike KS2, Year 1 and 2 children do not come into school in their PE kits. Hair must be tied back and earrings removed or protected with tape during PE sessions. I would just remind parents/carers that staff are not able to remove and replace earrings. Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit as follows: 

Trainers or plimsolls 

House colour T-shirt 

White PE shorts 

Green track suit bottoms or black skins underneath the white shorts maybe worn for outdoor games in cold weather. Skins must not be worn without white shorts over the top. 

All items of uniform need to be clearly marked with your child's name 

 

Uniform 

Uniform promotes a sense of belonging and equality. We expect our children to demonstrate pride in their appearance and respect for the school uniform. Please ensure your child is in correct uniform at all times.

Grey tailored trousers or shorts 

Grey skirt, pinafore dress 

White shirt/polo shirt 

White short-sleeved shirt/blouse 

School bottle green round neck/V-neck sweatshirt or sweatshirt fabric cardigan 

School tie (optional) 

Black tights 

Grey socks (white socks can be worn with dresses) 

Green checked dress 

Black shoes 

 

Children should be well- presented and their white shirt/polo shirt must be tucked in at all times. 

 

Children must wear sensible black shoes to school, NOT TRAINERS or BOOTS. 

 

Makeup and nail varnish are not permitted. Excessive hair accessories or extreme hair styles or colour are also not permitted. 

 

No jewellery except for one, small, stud earring allowed in each ear. 

 

Analogue watches are encouraged but SMART watches are not allowed.

The Parent and Teachers’ Association also runs an excellent second-hand uniform shop on site. 

 

Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named as this makes it much easier to return lost items to their owner. There is a Lost property Box in Reception should your child lose any items. 

 

School helpers 

We are always very grateful for any help with reading, art activities etc. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact the school office in order that a DBS check can be completed. This also applies to any grandparents who wish to get involved too. 

Lunch boxes and snacks 

If your child has a packed lunch please make sure that you are providing a healthy lunchbox (see below for ideas). If you choose to send in a playtime snack please send only fruit, vegetables or cubes of cheese. Please note we have a child who has a peanut allergy so please do not send in any foods that contain nuts. 

Book Bags, Pencil Cases and Water Bottles 

Just a reminder that children must use a school book bag as we do not have the space to accommodate rucksacks etc as these are breaking the doors on the school lockers. Please 

do not send a pencil case into school as items get easily lost. We would prefer children to use a named school water bottle. 

Inclement Weather 

Please make sure you send an appropriate coat, hat, gloves depending on the weather. Please make sure your child has a pair of wellies in school for when we complete outdoor activities and Forest School.
